How to Play Texas Holdem

These days almost everyone knows how to play Texas Hold’em, but in case you’re one of the few who doesn’t, we’ll give you a quick run down on how the game is played.

The first thing we need to mention is the dealer button. This button is rotated clockwise around the table with a different player getting the button on each hand. The player to the left of the dealer button posts what’s called a small blind, and the next player to the left posts a big blind. These are forced bets before any cards are dealt, so that there will be some money in the pot when the hand starts.

Each player is then dealt two cards which no other players at the table can see. These cards are dealt one at a time starting with the player in the small blind. Once these cards are dealt, the player to the left of the big blind (position referred to as “Under the Gun” or “UTG” for short) has the first option. His choices are fold, call the amount of the big blind or raise the pot. Options rotate around the table with each player having an option to act. Once this betting round is complete, three community cards are placed in the center of the table (this is called the flop). These cards all players can use towards making the best five card hand.

After the flop, a betting round takes place with the player to the left of the dealer button getting the first option to act. When this round is complete, a fourth community card is added to the center of the table called the turn and another betting round takes place. Once completed, a fifth and final community card known as the river is added to the board and a final betting round takes place.

After this process is complete, players still in the hand reveal their two hole cards, and the player with the best 5 card poker hand is awarded the pot. This hand consists of any combination of the two hole cards and the five community cards.

If you’re a beginner to poker, you’ll want to consider picking up a good book on the game. There is a popular saying that Texas Hold’em is a game that takes moments to learn but a life time to master. Our suggestion on where to start is to pick up Dan Harrington’s Cash Games books.

In the meantime a great way to practice Texas Holdem is at the low stakes games at Dirty Stack Poker.
